Fitting the Electrodes—Illustrated Instructions

Precise positioning of the electrodes is crucial to accurate measurements.

For BIA measurements of the bodily composition, 2 electrodes are attached to the hand and 2 more to the foot. The voltage is fed in through the two outer electrodes at the hand and foot (red alligator clips). The resistance is measured over the two interior electrodes (black alligator clips).

Precise positioning of the electrodes is one of the crucial factors for obtaining accurate and reproducible measurements:

Hand Electrodes

Wrist electrode (measuring electrode): Please locate the highest point of the ulnar capitulum. From this point, draw a horizontal line across the wrist. Affix the proximal (inner) edge of the electrode along this line. The electrode shall be located predominantly above the soft, more conductive joint gap. Here, fasten the black alligator clip of the hand cable (yellow sleeve) to the lug of the electrode.

Finger joint electrode (signal electrode): Please identify the highest points of the 2nd and 3rd finger basal joints. Through these points, draw a horizontal line across the basal joints. Affix the distal (outer) edge of the electrode along this line. The main surface of the electrode should lie above the soft tissue between the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal bones. Here attach the red alligator clip of the hand cable (yellow sleeve) to the lug of the electrode.

Foot Electrodes

Ankle joint electrode (measuring electrode): Please identify the highest points of the lateral and inner malleolus. Through these points, draw a horizontal line across the dorsum pedis. Affix the proximal (inner) edge of the electrode along this line. The main surface of the electrode should lie above the joint gap of the upper ankle. Here attach the black alligator clip of the foot cable (red sleeve) to the lug of the electrode.

Toe joint electrode (signal electrode): please identify the highest points of the 2nd and 3rd toe basal joints (for this purpose, bend the toes, so that the joint becomes clearly visible). Through these points, draw a horizontal line across the basal joints. Affix the distal (outer) edge of the electrode along this line. The main surface of the electrode should lie over the soft tissue between the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal bones. Here attach the red alligator clip of the foot cable (red sleeve) to the lug of the electrode.
